Which types of trees should I plant on the south side of my home so as not to shade the winter sun?

Trees for Energy Conservation April 27, 2016 Print Friendly and PDF

The northern latitudes of our continent are cool during the winter months when the sun is in the southern hemisphere. This time of year we want the warming effects of the sun to reduce the energy usage of our homes and businesses.

The best types of trees to plant on our homes' south side in this part of the world are deciduous ones. Deciduous trees are those that lose their leaves in winter. As the weather gets cold, the sun's radiation can pass through the leafless canopy and provide energy conservation benefits for buildings.
