Sonja Koukel, PhD

Sonja Koukel, PhD, is Assistant Professor and New Mexico State University Extension Community and Environmental Health Specialist in the Extension Family and Consumer Sciences Department. She maintains a Healthy Homes Specialist Certification through the National Environmental Health Association and also serves as the Co-Director of the Southwest Border Food Safety and Defense Center. Koukel’s teaching, research and outreach activities include the emerging Affordable Health Care Act, food protection and safety, healthy homes and workplaces, and emergency planning and preparedness. Dr. Koukel earned her doctorate in Family and Consumer Sciences Education with a focus in Educational Instructional Technology at Texas Tech University, Lubbock.
