How many eggs does a chicken lay per year?

Small and Backyard Flocks September 27, 2012 Print Friendly and PDF

The number of eggs a chicken lays per year depends on the chicken's breed, the nutrition it is provided, and the management of its flock. A hen in a commercial egg production operation lays about 300 eggs per year. This level of production is not likely to occur in a small flock, but when fed the proper diet and subjected to an appropriate lighting program, a hen of the right breed should be able to produce more than 200 eggs per year, even in a small flock.
