Why do I need a safe room?

Agricultural Disaster Preparedness and Recovery August 25, 2016 Print Friendly and PDF

Extreme windstorms can damage or destroy structures and turn debris into dangerous or deadly projectiles. They are capable of causing serious harm and devastating entire communities in seconds.

A safe room provides protection from high winds and flying debris. Consider building a safe room in the basement, an interior room on the first floor, or on a concrete slab-on-grade foundation or garage floor. Safe room designs should meet or exceed the ICC (International Code Council)-500 Storm Shelter Standard.
