Should I keep the title to my car in the glove box of the car or with other important documents at home?

Personal Finance November 26, 2013 Print Friendly and PDF

It is not recommended that you keep the title to your vehicle in the glove box. If your car is stolen, thieves would then have all of the information needed to easily sell your vehicle—your title number and the registration information, which is presumably in the glove box.

It is recommended that you keep vehicle titles with other important documents in a safe deposit box or a fireproof container at home. An extra precaution would be to keep a photocopy of the car title at home with your financial records and/or with a trusted family member or friend. When you receive new registration cards, another suggestion is to keep the old registration card in your wallet as back-up documentation. This way, if your car is stolen, you will then have the license number and vehicle identification number (V.I.N.) with you to provide to investigating police officers to speed recovery of your vehicle.
