Imported Fire Ants March 21, 2016 Print Friendly and PDF

Currently, fire ant baits in the United States are based on eight different active ingredients.  Each active ingredient may be sold under several trade names. Trade names and use instructions are subject to change.  Therefore, always read the label each time you use a fire ant bait to make sure that the bait you plan to use can be legally applied to your use site.  Not every bait is registered (legal to use) in each state. The best way to ensure a bait is registered in your state is to buy your fire ant bait from a reputable store within your state.   See also The Latest Broadcast on Fire Ant Control Products.

abamectin-based baits

  • A bait containing the active ingredient abamectin inhibits nerve transmission.  When used as an individual mound treatment, it kills worker ants and queens quickly.  When it is broadcast, it acts more like an insect growth regulator, preventing the production of viable eggs.  When broadcast,  it acts quickly to prevent new fire ants from developing, but it takes longer for the existing workers to die.  Results from broadcast applications in late spring or early summer can be seen in six to eight weeks.

  • Baits that contain abamectin include:

    Award II Fire Ant Bait

    Ascend Fire Ant Bait

    Clinch Ant Bait

    Optigard Fire Ant Bait

fipronil-based baits

  • Baits containing the active ingredient fipronil eventually kill the fire ant workers as well as the queens.  Fipronil affects the nervous system of the fire ant.  Fire ant workers begin to die in about two weeks, but it can take 4-6 weeks to control all the ants.

  • Maxforce FC Fire Ant Bait is a bait that contains fipronil

hydramethylnon-based baits

  • Baits that contain indoxacarb include:

    Advion Fire Ant Bait

metaflumizone-based baits

  • Baits containing the active ingredient metaflumizone kill the fire ant workers as well as the queen.  Metaflumizone is not toxic to the fire ant until it is digested.  At that point, it breaks down into a toxic form that fatally blocks the insect's sodium channels.  You will see results from broadcast applications in a few days.

  • Extinguish Professional Fire Ant Bait contains (S)-methoprene

pyriproxifen-based baits
