According to the Journal of the American Dietetic Association, “Evidence suggests that breakfast consumption may improve cognitive function related to memory, test grades, and school attendance. Breakfast as part of a healthful diet and lifestyle can positively impact children’s health and well-being.” The Dairy Council of California emphasises that there is a scientific consensus on the health benefit in nutrition education and especially in educating the school community on breakfast. The Dairy Council has provided the following fun and easy to use resources to promote healthy breakfasts.
A Healthy Breakfast: Learn the “3 out of 5” Way Video is a fun and engaging video for students between Kindergarten through High School. This lesson helps students learn a well-balanced breakfast by choosing incorporating three food groups out of the total of 5 food groups.
Power Up Your Breakfast Game was designed for Transitional Kindergarten through second grade students and can take up to 10 minutes. In the game, students build a healthy breakfast by clicking and dragging foods from a virtual kitchen to put on their breakfast plate with the 3 out of 5 concept.
The Boost Brain Power with Breakfast Worksheet is a print-friendly handout which includes healthy breakfast tips and a drawing activity for preferably kindergarten to 5th grade students.
After the students have enjoyed the video, game and worksheet, be sure to continue the nutrition education with our free nutrition lesson plans for K-12 students as each program has a breakfast lesson.
