Design and management of organic strawberry/vegetable rotations

About the Webinar

Findings from a four-year rotation study and on-farm trials will be discussed. The study compared two and four year rotations with either broccoli or lettuce as the primary vegetables grown between strawberry crops. Disease and fertility were managed by a combination of winter cover crops and use of either anaerobic soil disinfestation or mustard seed meal additions prior to planting strawberry. Data on yields, disease incidence, soil nitrogen dynamics and preliminary economic analysis will be presented.

About the Presenters

Dr. Joji Muramoto is an associate research of Department of Environmental Studies, University of California, Santa Cruz. He is a soil scientist/agroecologist specializing in fertility and soilborne disease management in organic strawberries and vegetables in central coastal California.

Professor Carol Shennan is an agroecologist in the Department of Environmental Studies. She has been working on management of organic cropping systems for many years, with an emphasis on cover crops, nutrient management and soilborne disease management; and is the Project Director of CalCORE - the California Collaborative Organic Research and Extension network - a consortium of researchers, farmers, extension and other organizations dedicated to organic agriculture research.
