Two videos will help you outsmart fire ants, whether in the home landscape or in larger areas. You will find you can save time and money and still get better fire ant control by using broadcast application.
The first video, Aerial Application of Fire Ant Bait Products, focuses on aerial application featuring North Star Helicopters, Inc. as an example. Also, see AMDRO Aerial Application Guide. [PDF]
The second video, Broadcast Application of Fire Ant Bait, focuses on using ground equipment featuring the Herd GT-77 model seeder as an example. See also Herd Seeder Calibration Tables for Applying Fire Ant Bait [PDF].
There are a number of effective imported ant bait products available that are best used for treating larger landscape areas including neighborhoods, school grounds, golf courses and parklands, and agricultural lands such as pastures and rangelands. Approved use sites are listed on each product's label. Most ant bait products are directed for use at extremely low application rates of 1 to 2 pounds of product per acre.
Properly calibrated specialized equipment is necessary to make these applications. Treatments can be cost-effective and environmentally friendly when applied correctly, and provide 80 to 90 percent reduction of ant populations. Speed and duration of control varies with product's active ingredient selected for application. Choosing the right ant bait product and applying it as directed using ground or aerial application equipment can make controlling imported fire ants successful and eliminate the problems these ants can cause.
