Cooperative Management

Business enterprises of all types, whether proprietorship, partnership, corporation, or cooperative, require the effective use of its assets in order to secure financial and organizational success. Although managerial skills are applicable across all business types, the management of a cooperative business often differs in complexity due to its foundation of user-ownership and control. In this section, we will discuss the unique attributes of cooperative management. We will cover the following main topics:

Current Challenges in Financing Agricultural Cooperatives, Choices magazine, Agricultural and Applied Economics Association, 2011 - Current challenges in agricultural cooperative finance are discussed. Finance is an important topic for senior cooperative leaders and boards of directors. Education is needed on how to align cooperative finance principles with cooperative principles and business models.

Current Issues in Strategy for Agricultural Cooperatives, Choices magazine, Agricultural and Applied Economics Association, 2011 - A summary of current issues in cooperative strategy is discussed. Strategy is an important topic for senior leaders and boards of directors. Education on the need to align strategy on patrons and cooperative principles is needed.

  • Directory of Farmer Cooperatives, Service Report 22, USDA Rural Development, October 2013 - This directory contains a list, by state, of almost 1,500 farmer-owned marketing, farm supply, service, fishery and bargaining cooperatives. The information includes the cooperative’s contact information, type of cooperative and products that they sell. An online directory is updated every month.
